Stormwater Program

Consulting & Sampling Services

The Clean Water Act established in 1977 by congress provides the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States. It gave EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry. The Clean Water Act also continued requirements to set water quality standards for all contaminants in surface waters. The Act made it unlawful for any person to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained under its provisions. It also funded the construction of sewage treatment plants under the construction grants program and recognized the need for planning to address the critical problems posed by nonpoint source pollution.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has promulgated regulations for the discharge of industrial waste waters and stormwater as part of the "National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System" (NPDES). These regulations are enforced by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and require permitting of water discharges for a variety of sources including industrial facilities, waste water treatment facilities, construction sites, and municipal operated separate storm sewer systems (MS4's).

The primary focus of the cleanWATER group is providing quality and assurance to the public and assistance to the regulated community regarding issues associated with drinking water standards established by the Michigan Department of Community Health and regulated discharges of stormwater and wastewaters regulated by the US EPA and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. cleanWATER professional staff has a combined 50+ years of experience and include Certified Industrial Hygienists, Certified Stormwater Managers, and Certified Hazardous Materials Managers.

The healthAIR Group has designed a variety of programs and procedures to assist municipalities, public schools, and industry with development of programs, policies, and procedures required for compliance and confidence with the various regulations and requirements associated with both safe drinking water and water discharges to the environment.

Drinking Water Sampling

Clean drinking water is essential for good health. The United States Environmental Protection Agency enforces drinking waters standards to ensure that the water drinking water supply remains uncontaminated. This standard are covered under the Primary Drinking Water Act and includes Primary Drinking Water Standards for serious contaminant issues and Secondary Drinking Water Standards for offencive water issues such as odor or foam. Whether you need lead/copper sampling in drinking water to monitor piping issues or you have concerns about the color of your drinking water, The healthAIR Group can assist in sampling collection and analysis programs. Sampling can be conducted for a few concerns or many, including items such as biological, organics, in-organics and pesticides.

Industrial & Wastewater Discharges

Water quality protection has been a long-standing concern in Michigan. An effort to protect Michigan's water resources began early in the twentieth century, with the enactment of the Michigan Water Resources Commission Act (Act 245) in 1929. The NPDES permit process was initiated by The Federal Water Pollution Control Act amendments of 1972. Whether you discharge wastewaters to the local waste treatment plant or treat wastes prior to discharge, The cleanWATER group can assist with preparation and submission of wastewater discharge application documents as well as development and implementation of policies and procedures required for compliance items outlined in your discharge permit. The cleanWATER group has assisted a wide variety of clients with sampling and analysis of waste water discharges to a local municipal wastewater treatment plant along with assisting industrial waste water treatment or pre-treatment facilities in testing and monitoring of effluent discharges.

Stormwater Consulting

Various government agencies regulate storm water discharge. The healthAIR Group's stormwater trained and certified consultants are prepared to assist in your discharge permit, outfall determinations or any portion of your needed compliance issues.
